Before & After Care

Thinking about getting a new set of dreadlocks? Or perhaps you've had them installed for the last 4-6 weeks and are taking them out? What should you do to help keep your scalp healthy?
I'm sure we've all stumbled across those videos on TikTok where ladies are getting the scalp massage at the spa and it literally gives you goosebumps. If you can afford that then I recommend that for the before and after but in if you're like me and can't afford that then read on!
The day of or before I wash my hair with gentle hair care products, do a little research for products that will work for you but what I use is Moroccan Oil Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner. Then I use an oil to help with my dry scalp which is also from the Moroccan Oil brand, to ensure there's no little flakes once my hair dries. I then do my own little scalp massage while massaging in the oil, unfortunately this isn't going to feel as good as the spa but it definitely helps! Final step is installing my dreadlocks and voila that's my before care strategy and if you'd like to add more steps you can but I would stray from putting to many products in as this may cause build up.
Ready to take your dreads out? Here's my process when I take mine out. After removing all the dreads give your scalp a good ole scratch because that shit feels so dang good. At this time I don't brush my hair even though it looks like really small Shirley Temple curls and I instead get right into the shower to wet my hair. I would divert from having a bath and you'll figure out why here in just a second. Once your hair is nice and wet lather in your gentle shampoo with a shampoo scrubber. The scrubber helps massage your scalp and just feels so dang good. After rinsing out your hair you're going to notice the amount of hair that seems to be falling out but have no fear as this is just the hairs that naturally fall out and that have been caught in your braids. Moving on to the conditioner, once you have a bunch in your hair, grab a hair brush and begin gently combing your hair to help remove any pesky loose hairs still caught in your hair. Once your brush starts to easily glide through your hair put your head under the shower stream and continue to brush your hair, once all the knots are gone thoroughly rinse your hair. Now once you're done in the shower you can do more scalp care with oils or whatever your routine may be but please let your hair air dry and refrain from using a blow dryer.
